West Seattle Farmers Market opens this weekend

We’re nearly halfway through spring and closing in on summer, which means opening dates for Seattle Neighborhood Farmers Markets are cropping up everywhere. This weekend marks the 2007 premiere for the West Seattle Farmers Market, leading the pack of seven opening dates from now through June. The West Seattle market features over 35 Washington State farmers and small food processors each week, which means lots and lots of cherries and veggies and cheese, oh my.

Make a little stop off there Sunday, if
you feel so inclined. I know I will; I’m a big fan of farmers markets. I’d like to say I go to stock my fridge with wholesome, organic, fresh produce, but let’s be honest here. I go for the free lunch I get from samples and the oodles of home-baked goods. I’ve never been one to pass-up the chance to buy a Rice Krispie treat that could feed a small village–a small village in my belly!

Look for these farmers markets opening in your neighborhood (in order of opening day):

West Seattle: Sundays, 10-2p.m., April 29th - December 30th
Columbia City: Wednesdays, 3-7p.m., May 2nd - October 31st
University District: Saturdays, 9-2p.m., May 4th - December 29th
Broadway: Sundays, 11-3p.m., May 13th - November 18th
Lake City: Thursdays, 3-7p.m., May 17th - October 4th
Magnolia: Saturdays, 10-2p.m., June 2nd - October 13th
Phinny: Fridays, 3-7p.m., June 15th - September 28th

The Seattle Neighborhood Farmers Markets aren’t the only markets around, there’s also the Seattle Markets in Fremont, Ballard, Wallingford, and Madison Valley (plus Queen Anne coming soon apparently!). They tend to be a bit more upscale and diverse than the neighborhood markets, with more non-food food items (particularly at Fremont). Although apparently the Madison one is moving to the parking lot of the frickin Grocery Outlet this year, ick.

Check out the awesome, delicious food at the stand for Little Prague Deli and Bakery. I grew up in a Czech neighborhood in Chicago and every time I have a pastry from Little Prague, not only does it make me sentimental, but yet it also makes me miss home just a little bit more.

Forgot to mention that Little Prague’s stand will be at the West Seattle farmers market.

    Thanks for the updates!
I’m a HUGE fan of the Fremont Sunday market. I always seem to find something that I can’t go home without.

And, LOVE the recommendation for Little Prague. Extending my pastry selection sounds dreamy!

U District is year around now, of course.

If I had one recommendation, it would be to go early-early during strawberry season (June-ish) and pick up as many as you can eat in one weekend. Strawberries do not travel well, and the locals are blood-red to the core and strongly flavored. They’re heaven.

Of course, you’ll get about 48 hours to eat them before they’re a rotten mush. But if you happen to own an ice cream maker like I do… you can turn them into sorbet with some sugar syrup and a little orange juice to brighten the flavor.

oh man. 3:00 is officially my office-munchy, i-need-chocolate hour.
and that strawberry ice cream bit just made me snacky, times ten.
sounds fabulous! thanks for the tip!
