Seattle Times loses Pulitzer to non-finalist

Did you know that the Pulitzer Prizes were announced at 12:15pm today? Lucky for you, I did, and I’m here with breaking news (unintentionally turning Metroblogging Seattle into a local Mediabistro ripoff–FishbowlSeattle? Salmonbowl?). In a strange turn of events, the Seattle Times managed to lose the Pulitzer Prize in Investigative Journalism to the Birmingham News. And they weren’t even finalists in the category!
Perhaps you remember that the Times was rumored to hold two of the three finalist spots in the Investigative Journalism category. The third, as confirmed in the announcement today, was held by the Hartford Courant. So how did those Alabamians swoop in for a win?

Awarded to Brett Blackledge of The Birmingham (Ala.) News for his exposure of cronyism and corruption in the state’s two-year college system, resulting in the dismissal of the chancellor and other corrective action. (Moved by the Board from the Public Service category.) [#]

That’s right, the Pulitzer Prize board hates Seattle and Connecticut so much that they took an article from another category and gave it the prize. The Times just can’t catch a break today, can they?
