tiger beat : transatlantic orphan rivalry heats up

Tigervsbear

As followers of CuteOverload must have noticed, a new orphaned baby mammal is challenging Woodland Park’s unnamed tiger cub for world adorableness supremacy. In Berlin, a polar bear called Knut made his internet debut, frolicking clumsily while making love to the camera. On top of his fuzzy-faced charm, Knut even has a backstory to rally fans: the little eisbear was abandoned by his cruel aging mother and left to die until overzealous zookeepers nursed him back to health amid protests of the evil animal rights activists who insist that he would have been better off left die.

It’s a compelling story, and sure to win him some worldwide admirers, but the Seattle Times reminds us that Knut isn’t the only orphan with an internet video franchise on his paws. Before you give your heart to the new guy, don’t forget that our littlest tiger also suffered from indifferent mother syndrome, but unlike those mean Germans, no one in town even thought to compare life in a zoo to a fate worse than death. [times] It all sounds like the makings of a heartwarming animated buddy picture, doesn’t it?

The next phase in the ultimate battle of cuteness is next month, when both make their debuts. For now, you can tune into their respective videos: tiger [zoo.org] vs. bear [zoo-berlin].
