Spring Cleaning: Northwest Center
It’s closet cleaning time in my apartment, time to get rid of all of those sweaters I thought were a good idea two years ago and to let go of the last vestiges of my highly impractical old Florida wardrobe. There are lots of places to donate clothes and household goods in town (There are lists here and here, to start, as well as good old Goodwill), but what if you’re like me and don’t drive? Lugging five or six bags of stuff down to the donation boxes via Metro is just not practical, and few charities will pick up anything that isn’t furniture.
But Northwest Center will. Northwest Center provides support for people with developmental disabilities, all the way from early childhood education to adult vocational help. And they’ll come get your things. I filled out a donation form and 10 minutes later got an email with a scheduled pick-up day. I’ll put my bags outside the door on Thursday morning, marked “NWC”, and sometime that day they’ll get them and take them somewhere that they can be used. Programs like Northwest Center usually sell them to places like Value Village and use the money to help fund their programs. There’s more room in my closet, and everyone wins.

You’ve had better luck than I have, then. More often than not, they just don’t show up, and we end up having to pull the donations back into the house when it starts raining the next day. Maybe we’re just on a bad route, though.
