enfaming the locals : mcleod opens notables

Long have we suffered in Seattle without a way of keeping track of what our local celebrities were doing on a daily basis? Where do they get their coffee? When can they be seen stumbling home after a hard night of heavy drinking? How do they spend their Sunday brunching hours? And just who are they?
New Yorkers have the joy of Gawker Stalker (and a lot of real live celebrities living in the city). Until now, we had neither. But we do have a collection of people who might not have achieved national levels of fame, but are nonetheless notable enough to be noticed at bars, restaurants, and on the street. It is these people that are celebrated in the latest exhibition at McLeod Residence.
Seattle Notables opens tonight in concert with Belltown’s first Friday artwalk, and includes seven photographs on lightboxes by Adam Weintraub [#], portraits by Alice Wheeler [#], and an exhibit of paintings [#] curated by Laurie Kearney, all celebrating Seattle’s particular brand of fame. In addition to the exhibits, you can buy your own piece of local celebrity in the form of tile coasters so that the faces of your favorites can protect your table from unsightly rings.
The experiment continues on the internet with the launch of seattlenotables.com, a new comprehensive resource for cataloging the habits of our city’s most notable characters. Head over there and let the rest of us know who you’ve seen and where you saw them. And study-up: Next week McLeod Residence will play host to a costume party where you’ll be judged (by the Lashes!) on your ability to impersonate a celebrity of your choice.
