Grey’s and the Ferry Boats

Just when you thought the series couldn’t get any more Seattleriffic, Grey’s Anatomy is about to embark on a two-part extravangaza centered on a ferry accident [Seattle Times].

I guess I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I love the ferries. Growing up in part of Kansas that is as militantly anti-water as it is anti-gay, ferries are just about the most novel thing ever. Boat rides? As transportation? With cars??? Genius! I love it. So anything involving ferries? I love it too. On the other hand, two episodes all about the ferries will surely result in infinite repetitions of the phrase “ferry boats.” And that? That I do not love. I hate it.

As a side note, I’m curious why ferries capture the imagination of so many transplants, imaginary Grey’s ones included. Is it only the novelty? The sweeping views? The haute cuisine of the concession stands? Or are we all just really easily amused?

Back to the Times article, the highlight is surely the concern voiced by Washington State Ferries:

The state was reluctant to participate in the show because it involves medical drama and officials were worried it may seem real to viewers.

“Knowing the risk involved, Washington State Ferries moved very carefully with the filming of the episode,” said Mike Anderson, head of the state ferries. “We were concerned that whatever incident the show portrayed as causing the problem not imply negligence on the part of the ferry system.”

Surely this is the first time that anyone has ever expressed concern over Grey’s being TOO REAL TO HANDLE. Perhaps they’re mistakenly thinking of the McSweeney’s version [#].

    Hi Janelle,

As far as I know Grey’s has only filmed in Seattle twice, most recently in the fall of 2006. I haven’t personally seen any souvenirs, but Pike Place Market would probably be the most likely place to have them if anywhere. Enjoy your trip!
