friday agenda: two kinds of cover nights

- After a few years of early mornings helping some friends run a tailgate party that included a karaoke machine and scores of people too drunk or not drunk enough (before noon!) trying to sing (a certain regular’s rendition of “Gloria” has been forever seared into my neurons), I’ve tried to maintain a strict policy of avoiding it at all costs. Tonight is the most compelling excuse for breaking my ban. Three Imaginary Girls present a star-studded imaginary holiday karaoke bash [tig] tonight with members of your favorite local bands (including Speaker Speaker, Head Like a Kite, Math and Physics Club, and so many more) taking turns at the mic, a pre-party with acoustic sets from Tiny Vipers and Fruit Bats, and John Roderick milling around as a goddamn indie rock Santa. priceless! [crocodile]
- The Harry Nilsson resurgence of 2006 might rank among the year’s less expected phenomena. There was a movie about him [appropriately titled Who Is Harry Nilsson (and why is everybody talkin' about him)?] and the Walkmen covered one of his albums. In the years between Harvey Danger’s breakup and Harvey Danger’s reunion, Sean Nelson became enamored with the songwriter and conceived a tribute project (appropriately titled Nelson Sings Nilsson). That dream has been made a reality [myspace] in the form of Nelson and a twenty-four piece orchestra. [townhall]

tonight is going to be super fun! and, if you want to go to both the imaginary holiday party and Sean Nelson’s big night (how can a mortal choose?) - you can save $2 off the price of admission to the tig event if you show your Nelson does Nillson ticketstub at the door. How’s that for mega merriment?
