When you think of a tea house, maybe lace doilies and creepy dolls come to mind. Or new age music and handmade teapot warmers. Remedy Teas, the newest entry into the cafe culture on the suddenly burgeoning stretch of 15th Avenue is neither. Instead, you’re greeted by an inviting layout — small tables and benches line one wall, a low T-shaped table is surrounded by comfortable cushion seats — and modern decor — cool recessed greens and white tile, scientific glassware as vases, and an entire wall holding their 150 organic teas.

At the counter, several pots of tea are available for sampling and a row of test tubes line the entryway. Each numbered tube provides an opportunity for hands-on experience before making a selection. Teas span the range of traditional (white, green, oolong, black) and the menu includes exotic selections (pu-ehr, rooibos, yerba mate) as well botanicals. Within each category are a wide variety of choices; some are old fashioned and familiar, but most include a creative array of flavors. Although the number of options could seem overwhelming, the menu descriptions are thorough and creative. Further, the staff are very helpful in guiding indecisive sippers in the right direction.

Remedy3 Beverages are sold by the glass or pot (small or large) and can also be purchased in bulk. I ordered a small pot, and it arrived on a clean white tray, along with a warming rack, a candle for heat, and the leaves, which the cafe is happy to re-steep should the need arise. They also offer tea lattes, smoothies, and alcohol-spiked versions. In addition to the usual bakery case, breakfasty items, savory snacks, and food are available. A collection of enticing tea sandwiches ($4.50) include classics like cucumber and more daring like nutella + apple, crusts included. Those looking to make an event of their visit would do well to order a tea service, which includes four sandwich squares, a small pot of tea, a truffle, cookies, fruit, and a scone, presented on a three-tiered platter ($12.75, serves 1 to two). I watched a father-daughter pair sharing the towering tea service and they seemed delighted by the whole process.

Outdoor seating and free WiFi are also available, making it a great spot to sit and study or a fun place to bring a date or gather with friends.
