thursday agenda: album leaf + dirty on purpose vs. minus the bear + friends
Among the embarrassment of riches on tonight’s stages, a couple more than worthy of your consideration:
- Tonight’s lineup at Neumo’s provides an interesting survey course on Intro to Seattle Indie with an impressive cross-section of the local bands. Minus the Bear, Slender Means, Sirens Sister [myspace], and Spook the Horse [neumos]
- Jimmy Lavelle (a.k.a., the Album Leaf) recorded the meticulously gorgeous In A Safe Place in Sigur Rós’s magical swimming pool studio. For Into the Blue Again [mp3] he retreated to the wild country just outside Seattle (Bear Creek Studio). Although they’re soundtrack-suitable albums (count the tracks from In A Safe Place that showed up on an episode of your favorite drama), the soothing post-rock stylings translate surprisingly well in a live setting, particularly when you add real band and live visuals to the mix. If you have an Album Leaf tattoo, you can get into tonight’s show for free. With Dirty on Purpose; so the evening won’t be completely lyrics-free. [chopsuey]

and all dwarfed by the classic pop stylings of the pernice brothers :) few songwriters can surround such dark, depressing lyrics with catchy uplifting melodies better than joe pernice.
