Open Mic at the Wayward

Wandering through Greenwood today I found that my favorite coffee shop in Seattle, The Wayward Coffeehouse was having its weekly open mic. I haven’t been to an open mic since High School and thought it was about time to revisit it. I was in a shit mood and I figured some free entertainment would change that.

I got there at about 5:00pm and had a couple hours to kill (the open mic starts at 7:00). It was easy to kill the two hours, I got a venti vanilla latte for less than I pay for a Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks and sat my ass down and started putting down some ideas for a theatre company I want to start. The coffee was delicious and got me buzzin so hard I could barely sit still when the open mic finally started. I kid you not, I had to drum my leg with my pen relentlessly, mmmmm caffeine.

The show started and had a substitute MC who did a damn good job and recited some of the nights best poetry. He’s an amazing poet, a sort of Dr Seuss for adults. He does this thing where each poem he writes jumps off the last poem he’s written, its very cool. I didn’t get his name cause I suck but will next week.

Then a guy calling himself Soul Child came up to the mic and did poetry of his own from memory, something awesome about him just KNOWING that shit cold, without his book, and his poetry? Someone give this kid a fucking scholarship NOW! Truly amazing heart felt witty poetry. He shared a story that lead to his second poem and then brought down the house with that poem too, from MEMORY!

Then we had a guitarist and a muted trumpet player. There was so much talent there I was inspired myself to get up and share my crappy haiku. I ended up not doing that because again I suck but I just wasn’t quite comfortable getting up there yet.

The poets were extremely diverse too, gay, trans, black, white, male, female. It really rocked. If you haven’t been to an open mic because you think it’s a bunch of beatnik weirdos you should give the open mic at Wayward a try, its free and it’s the best collection of talent I’ve seen at an open mic. I might get the nerve up to read next Sunday too.

WiFi is FREE and there are tons of outlets and comfortable chairs and tables. The place has an extensive selection of games to play and a good sized selection of books to read. Mostly paperback fiction.

The employees are awesome. I had a discussion with one about the awesomeness that is ABC’s Lost and he had a lot of opinions on sci-fi I totally disagreed with, he hates Highlander! How can you hate that TV show? It was so awesome. But still even though we disagreed it was a lot of fun.

Open Mics are every Sunday at 7:00pm with sign ups at 6:30pm. The Wayward also hosts story time for kids on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:00am on Tuesdays. Live music from 8:00pm to 10:00pm Friday and Saturdays and are open till 11:00pm every night.
