Keeping the kids safe
My mother called last night to ask about her granddaughter. Specifically, she was worried that in the wake of this current spate of school shootings (now with Added Sexual Assault(TM)) if I felt like my 2-year-old was safe in her daycare.
Yes, I said. The security is reasonable, though somewhat human-driven. The playground is below street level and only accessible from the main building. They have an evacuation plan. They’re doing the best they can. No system is safe, but they’re taking the best and most reasonable precautions, short of sub-dermal RFID chips and retinal scans.
Not surprisingly, my mother isn’t the only one concerned. Seattle Schools got enough calls, apparently, that they are reviewing their security procedures. It’s always good to review these things before a crisis, I think. Better to be pro-active than to react to a situation and do really stupid and regrettable things later.
