Popeye was wrong: Spinach could be bad for you

I’ve been telling y’all for years that eating leafy things is gross, and now I’ve been vindicated–not only is spinach yucky, it’ll also make you sick [P-I]. Maybe. Grocery stores all around town are yanking bagged spinach from the shelves, even though there are only two “probable” cases in the state so far, as just washing the stuff won’t get rid of the E. coli on it.

The problem has so far been traced back to Natural Selection Foods, who have obligingly stopped shipping anything involving spinach until the problem has been solved. A lot of local restaurants are substituting cooked kale for spinach in some of their dishes and mixed greens for spinach salads. And ok, technically the E. coli comes from improperly treated fertilizer, not the leafy bits themselves. But just to be on the safe side, it might be a good idea to lay off the greens until folks know more about how much has been contaminated.

While you’re telling me not to eat spinach or risk potential gastrointestinal disaster the Google text-relevant ads are enticing me with recipes for tasty spinach salad.

The internet is total anarchy tonight.
