40 years after the final frontier
I have never seen an episode of Star Trek, although I did see a few of the movies a couple of years ago, via an ex boyfriend. So you won’t find me at the Star Trek 40th Anniversary Gala Celebration & Conference at the SFM this weekend. Sorry. But you will find a whole mess of various Star Trek cast members, some scientists, and the always-present-at-SFM-events Greg Bear. “The weekend will feature three days of presentations and panels by actors, authors, entrepreneurs, and scientists exploring how Star Trek has changed the world over the past 40 years. Star Trek actors will reminisce about their remarkable experiences, offer behind the scenes anecdotes and open the floor to the fans for Q&A sessions.”
I’m pretty sure that if you’re the type to go to these things you already know it’s happening, but just in case you ought to know that you can get a single-day entry ticket for $25 and all three days for $95. (The thing starts today, so you should probably hurry.) There are varying levels of gala events aside from that which you can figure out on your own.
If you do go, please take pictures and let us know if there are fabulous costumes. We love costumes. (Michael Hanscom, I’m looking at you.)

Sorry, no photos, and um, not sure what you mean by “fabulous” costumes. There were lots of Klingons with poorly affixed bumpy foreheads (the couple sporting the matched granny glasses were sort of a hoot - evidentally, optometry hasn’t progressed much by the 23rd Century), a pair of pretty good-looking Romulans, one lone Ferenghi femail (starfleet member, so fully clothed) with her hair sticking out the back of her “nodes”, many, many Starfleeters in a plethora of Original Series, movie series, TNG & DS9 configurations; one “Roswell Alien” with very Big Sunglasses, and a rather strange man wearing some sort of Flouncy Ball Gown Of Tomorrow get-up.
Heh. Pity I didn’t (a) see this before the event, and (b) have the money to attend! Thanks for the thought, though….
