bumbershoot agenda: sunday

139447916 82F0Fe0D2A M There are a lot of things to see or do at Bumbershoot; Team Metroblogging helps you ward off confusion and indecision by pointing out some of the highlights. In this edition: Sunday.

The easiest strategy for Sunday: Just set up camp in Memorial Stadium for the day. The world’s finest indie-pop supergroup New Pornographers are at 1pm. Stay for Austin’s criminally-good Spoon until 4. The evening “tokened” show brings you the Seattle darlings of hip hop, the Blue Scholars, followed by the smart, witty, and danceable rap superstar Kanye West. Pasty white KEXP-listening Pitchfork-reading tattooed indie boys have been wetting the pants in excitement for months over this lineup. [Ed: this occasional Pitchfork reader would have made Spoon and New Pornographers the headliners instead of relegating them to the under-appreciated first shows of the day.]

If you decide that you need something other than a day of astroturf, there are plenty of acts to lure you away from the stadium. George Saunders participates in a panel discussion at 3:00 in the Bagley Wright. [Ed: This one kills me. As much as I adore George Saunders, not seeing Britt Daniel & co. is not an acceptable trade-off.] There’s also a comedy showcase featuring Mary Lynn Rajskub (the best part of 24) and Aziz Ansari (responsible for devastatingly funny “Clell Tickle: Indie Marketing Guru” [youtube]). The comedy shows require line dedication; so show up early to get a spot. If you’re shut out, or prefer more literary flavor, Charles D’Ambrosio joins John Raymond to talk about writing locally.

If you’re not into the hip-hop spectacular, don’t feel bad. It’s totally O.K. Because cutiepants duo Mates of State are playing (7:15, Broad Street)! Somehow all of their back and forth singing to each other ends up feeling a like little not-at-all corny love songs over drums and classic keyboards. If you’re lucky, they’ll play their magnificently charming cover of “These Days.” Then you can either rush over to hear Swedish classical guitarist sensitive indie senstaion José González close out his set of blissful strummings (8:00, NW court), stay put for soothing downtempo electronics with Zero 7 (please, please, please leave your glowstick firedancing stuff at home), or rush to the mainstage to find a spot to watch Kanye.
