There are a lot of things to see or do at Bumbershoot; Team Metroblogging helps you ward off confusion and indecision by pointing out some of the highlights. In this edition: Friday. What, you say? Isn’t the festival only three days long this year?

Oh, Friday. It was always the day with the teenie bands in the stadium, the interesting local bands, and the artists who could only show on Friday because they were playing in Portland/Vancouver on Saturday night. But this year, because of either “logisitics” or “Bumbershoot people wanting to spend more time with their families,” Friday was dropped from the schedule. (Translation: With no Summer Nights At The Pier to help One Reel break even, there was no money to do Friday. Thanks a–hole NIMBYs in Wallingford who didn’t want concerts at Gasworks. I hope your plan to gate your community off is coming along swimmingly, too!)

Never fear, diehards. There is a little something to keep you festivaling on Friday. The first is an afternoon reception with Mayor Nickels. Awards will be presented, arts will be on display until 7pm, and the whole thing is free.

But the real action is what replaces the Friday evening shows: the 826 Seattle benefit. Have we mentioned the 826 Seattle benefit, People Talking And Singing? Dave Eggers? Smoosh? Colin Meloy? and a special guest who can’t be revealed until the moment he/she/they/it step out onto the stage? Yes, we’ve mentioned it, oh, 1,278,594 times already on here. But you should get a ticket (if you can) just to hear Sarah Vowell’s crypto-Okie accent. Oh, she sounds like home to me. Well, except that she’s a liberal. The liberal population in Oklahoma consists of two art teachers at Classen School of Advanced Studies in Oklahoma City, and I think one of my teachers at Tulsa Edison. If he’s still alive. But really, you should go. 826 Seattle is a great organization, and they love your money.

Back to Sarah Vowell again… I wish I had a ticket. Because, you know? I’d give $200 just to have Sarah read a list of ten Oklahoma towns that would just sound great in her crypto-Okie accent. Starting with Braggs. Which is down the road from Checotah. Hometown of Carrie Underwood, American Idol winner.
