Ghosts with BB guns menace Kent

Someone shot up the Kent Municipal Court building last night with a BB gun, and that someone doesn’t show up on any of the security cameras [P-I]. They broke six windows but don’t appear to have entered the building at all or tossed anything in.

Obviously, the answer is ghosts. Still, the police are chatting with other police in Puyallup to see if there’s any connection between these ghosts and whomever tossed explosives into the Puyallup courthouse last week.

white kids, washington’s strongest swimmers

Seriously? Today, the P-I reveals that people of color can’t swim. Actually, it’s about why white kids drown less than minority kids:

… [immigrant teens] consider drowning a matter of fate, Quan said. The teens’ parents might believe that people drown because spirits pull them under the water. But the parents nonetheless want more steps taken to prevent drowning … [p-i]

It’s unfortunate that the study — which found that Native Americans, Asian & Pacific Islanders, and African-American kids drown at a higher than average rate using death certificate data — couldn’t make use of socioeconomic indicators. Still, it’s odd that the P-I was only able to go on “name sounds like an immigrant” criteria to make its conclusions, particularly when the highest rate of drowning is among Native Americans.

Overheard at the zoo

Standing in line for the Decemberists concert:

Teenage girl: Guess what?!! I just looked at a leopard with Colin Meloy!

Teenage girl’s friend, who was holding her place in line: Who’s Colin Meloy?

Teenage girl: The lead singer for the Decemberists!

in other blogs: animal attacks?

Er, does anyone know why PikePlacePolitics has gone all animal attack videos all the time? Even their header graphic to read:

Wild Cats Videos
They tend to attack nasty people who piss them off. Good.

I must be missing something. Performance art? Subtle commentary? Or just an expired domain name?

In Other Blogs: Monkeys

In her most recent post, Seattle P-I blogger “TVGal” discusses a topic of important weight: Is Curious George a chimp or a monkey?

Valid points are raised on either side of the hotly contested issue. The pro-monkey camp repeatedly points out that in the text of the Curious George books he is specifically named as a monkey. The pro-chimp camp points out important facts of his physical design, most notably the absence of a tail. Bonus points to the commenter who name drops Kim Possible, one of my favorite cartoons.

So which is it: monkey or chimp?

wednesday agenda : goats, zoo

Goat

  • The weather looks like it will be absolutely appropriate for the Decemberists to play a show at the Zoo tonight. Perfectly overcast and autumnal with a minor chance of precipitation. Or maybe it’s just me being jealous of the lucky people who got tickets for the show [mb] and will probably get to hear a bunch of their new songs while the rest of us are stuck waiting for their new album to come out in October. It’s little consolation, this not sitting outside in the cold, but it’s all I’ve got. [zoo]
  • Another option is a public meeting in the Roosevelt neighborhood to hear all about how & why City Light is planning to bring in a tribe of goats to clear an acre of overgrown shrubbery in North Seattle. [times]

How else to say this? Starting tomorrow, Seattle will play host to an army of foreskin rights activists [times]. I can’t really imagine what a three-day anti-circumcision conference will look like and I apologize that Metroblogging didn’t bother to get on the press list to investigate. If you want to find out what it’s all about, it will cost you $250 to attend the whole event [nocirc], which takes place on the University of Washington campus.

Just be warned, this is a group that was “dismayed” by news of research suggesting that routine circumcision might dramatically reduce the spread of AIDS in Africa. (See also, “Mohels to Mozambique” [slate])

Blackbird Insists On Being Hottest Men’s Boutique In Town By Hiring Hottest Employees, Models

Blackbird Fall

First of all, who is this hot guy? I went on search of him at Blackbird in Ballard, but instead went home with some amazing fall styles. They’re one of the few stores in Seattle with their finger firmly on the pulse. They make Barney’s look like a Versace boutique in South Beach!

[Stolen from Slog who lifted it from IHeartSeattle. Keep the meme alive, chain-letter style!]
