State set to ice Ice

colt-ice.jpgMalt-liquor-connoisseur Josh tipped me off that Washington State may well pass regulations today banning the sale of Thunderbird, Miller High Life Ice, Colt 45 Ice and other high-alcohol beverages in certain Seattle districts.

Pioneered in Pioneer Square, these restrictions could soon be coming to the U-District, amongst other neighborhoods. No word on if early-1990s-flash-in-the-pan Zima is on the ban-list.

Man, out here in Detroit, I think I would help lead a riot if they took away my Schlitz Bull Ice (8% alcohol by volume) and I don’t think I’d be the only one…..

I keep wondering how this is even legal, since it’s not a full-on state-wide ban. I suppose it just comes down to the fact that street alcoholics aren’t prone to hire lawyers to test the constitutionality of these measures.

The WSLCB approves these AIA’s, but in reality, they just keep moving the problem from one neighborhood to another. The drunks are going to go where ever the cheap booze is, which means, instead of hanging out in P-Square or CapHill, they’ll be moving up into Greenwood, Wallingford, et al. So, this doesn’t do anything to solve the actual problem of how to cope with hard-core alcoholics, it just aleviates the symptom of certain neighborhoods having to look at them every day.
