white kids, washington’s strongest swimmers

Seriously? Today, the P-I reveals that people of color can’t swim. Actually, it’s about why white kids drown less than minority kids:

… [immigrant teens] consider drowning a matter of fate, Quan said. The teens’ parents might believe that people drown because spirits pull them under the water. But the parents nonetheless want more steps taken to prevent drowning … [p-i]

It’s unfortunate that the study — which found that Native Americans, Asian & Pacific Islanders, and African-American kids drown at a higher than average rate using death certificate data — couldn’t make use of socioeconomic indicators. Still, it’s odd that the P-I was only able to go on “name sounds like an immigrant” criteria to make its conclusions, particularly when the highest rate of drowning is among Native Americans.
