What an incredible smell you’ve discovered!
That fire at the NOAA dock my fellow Metbloggers Samantha and Zee covered got lots of airplay and pictures all day.
What none of the articles seem to mention is the smell.
My God, what an awful odor.
I tried to drive through Eastlake Avenue about 8 AM. Needless to say, I got detoured, but I was still downwind. Samantha described it as a ‘campfire,’ but that was generous at best. It smelled like chemicals, burning tires, charcoal, and sweat mixed with ash and grease.
Note to self: Never burn creosote.
Note to self #2: We don’t pay firefighters enough.

I smelled it in my apartment in the U-Disctrict last night. It smelled like a cross between rail road ties and those snake fireworks (that grow when you light them). It smelled really bad and it infiltrated my whole apartment. I didn’t know what it was until this morning, but that explained why I wasn’t able to see downtown late last night (the smoke).
I did mention it, but my comment was eaten by something. The whole university smelled of it this morning, even in the buildings. It was pretty nasty.
You should try being in my apartment, which is just a couple of blocks away from the fire. The thing was -still- burning when I walked home today, and all of the roads were blocked off. Smells like a tire fire in a tar pit in here, and I’m out of ideas for how to make it quit.
