There goes the neighborhood: ConWorks moving out
Yesterday, the Slog broke the news that Consolidated Works was going to be moving out of its South Lake Union space. I closed my eyes and held my breath, figuring that if I could pretend it wasn’t true hard enough, that they’d stay.
But nope, they’re leaving. The lease on the gigantic 500 Boren space is up on September 1st, and if they decide to stay they’ll have to make some very expensive city-mandated seismic improvements. Ok, fine, that makes sense–we don’t want the building falling down on unsuspecting art-goers. But the lease, signed of course with Vulcan, includes a clause that states that the nonprofit can be kicked out of the spot with nine months notice. So the ConWorks crew doesn’t feel like it makes much sense to spend so much money improving the space when they could be kicked out at any time to make way for condos.
Hopefully they’ll just be moving somewhere else, but either way they’re having a great big party the last weekend of the month and vacating their address a few months early.
