  • When your friends gear up for a story about a crazy dream they last night, you immediately seek out an escape route. That John Darnelle can turn material about dreams and druggy visions into famously lo-fi unfussy recordings leaving you wanting to hear more is some kind of miracle. The Mountain Goats play tonight at Neumos with Kimya Dawson, whose childlike indie-folksongs have a certain charm of their own. [neumos]
  • Although their critical darling status has faded a bit since Bows + Arrows, there’s still plenty to like about the Walkmen. They’re enthusiastic live performers who are bound to play most of the songs that made you fall for them in the first place. [showbox]
  • The electric car is dead and Ed Begley Junior is there for the funeral. Who Killed the Electric Car [siff] fits into the bold new tradition of documentaries that make little effort at being fair and balanced. The filmmakers and their subjects are deeply in love with the idea of cars that run on electricity and they aren’t afraid to admit it. The story of the birth and untimely demise of GM’s EV1 is told through quirky inventors, passionate sales team leaders, and celebrity interviews. The rise and fall of this little vehicle turns out to be a pretty interesting story, and the filmmakers don’t pull any punches in their indictment of the forces that caused its demise.
