A tough morning for law enforcement

I’ve lived in First Hill for quite a long time now so I’m generally immune to sirens. It was the sound of heavy machinery that woke me this morning. “Who on earth is running heavy machinery at six a.m.?” I wondered and threw on my bathrobe to go outside and look. As it happens, the “heavy machinery” was actually the sound of a news copter up in the air filming the clean up from a two-car colliision between two SPD units who were responding to a call for assistance from a King County Sherriff’s deputy who was involved in an altercation with a man he pulled over that resulted in him fatally shooting the man.

As the P-I reports, the shooting incident took place at about 2:30 a.m. and was witnessed by a prisoner the deputy was transporting to jail in downtown Seattle.

The collision happened shortly after that time; any idea why at 6 a.m. the intersection was still cordoned off with paramdics and aditional officers on standby? Is this usual procedure? By 7:30 the intersection was open again.

Any crash involving an SPD car seems to be over-investigated. I recall seeing a non-injury fender-cruncher with an SPD car that closed off Pike and Broadway for at least two hours.

When it’s two SPD cars involved and when a quicker response to the call for assistance might have prevented a death, then they’re gonna want to collect every tiny shred of evidence.
