Power Out?
Last night around 10:30 I heard a series of booms, and then my power went out. I sat in the dark for a few minutes before I went to peek out the bedroom window and, sure enough, it was dark as far as I could see.
After about an hour I started wondering if there was maybe a number I could call to find out what was going on. Admittedly, what I really wanted to know was why the power had gone out, if there was a car wreck or small earthquake or hoards of marauders creeping up Eastlake in a very quiet raid, but an estimated time of return would have been nice too. Unfortunately, the place where my wireless signal comes from was without power as well, so the internet was no longer at my disposal.
This morning I consulted the almighty Google, which directed me to Seattle City Light (duh), which gave me a hotline number–206.684.7400–that’s supposed to at least let a girl know if her outage has been reported. No estimates of time in the dark, though, which makes perfect sense but which is still a little disappointing.
Do you have a Power Outage Kit? ‘Cause I don’t, and ended up rummaging for candles (which you’re Not Supposed to Use in case of fire) and knocking things over trying to find matches. Which makes me think that maybe I should buy a flashlight.

Sucks, huh?! I came into the office to make coffee, check email, and revel in the heating. Ah, electricity, how I miss you when you’re gone!
I just called the message line, they posted an ETA of 2PM (any minute now!) and said that the cause was a “pole fire.”
I know it’s so last century but the number is in the phone book too… :)
Phone books? Oh, you must mean those things that I chuck in the recycling when they appear on my doorstep! ;-)
Power’s still out - SCL hotline has an updated ETA of 6PM. The question is: will the power come back on in time for The Simpsons and Family Guy? Because if not, heads are gonna roll!
or hoards of marauders creeping up Eastlake in a very quiet raid,
This is a most lovely mental image!
I don’t have any kind of emergency prep kits, and I won’t until I move.
But when I move…yeah. I’ll have the three day kit, the power outage kit, and everything else I can think of. I’m going to have to be incredibly self sufficient and prepared, since I won’t know a soul.
Which is kind of creepyweird to think about, really…
If I’d cared that much to find out, smarty pants, I could have called information on my telephone.
Yeah, Kelly, I was definitely a lot more prepared for things going badly before I made friends in this town.
