Tutti Frutti
One of the best things about spring is the access we get to fresh produce while it is still very fresh. Today while shopping at my local QFC [QFC] I noticed the display of exotic fruits and decided to splurge by trying one I’d never before tried. The Cherimoya is an interesting fruit; the exterior is a light green and the unpeeled fruit has the exterior texture of an artichoke or a bumpy, lumpy mango. The fruit inside is creamy white with a custard-like texture and very moist. The flavor is light, creamy and sweet, very “fruit punch” or “tutti fruitt” tasting. The many large, hard seeds scattered throughout the fruit are slightly annoying, but not enough to interfere with the pleasure of eating.
At $9.99 per pound, the cherimoya isn’t something I’m going to be eating every day but as a splurge item it was definitely a good selection. I sure love my Washington apples but it’s always exciting to discover a new treat.
