If you’ve ever thought of going carless
We here at Metroblogging tend to like Flexcar–heck, some of us even use it. And if you’ve been thinking about trying it yourself, now would be the time: they’re having a special sign-up deal right now where if you join by April 30th you get your membership fee back in driving credit [#]. Their only caveat is that you have to use a car at least once by the end of May to get the credit, which seems perfectly reasonable to me.
I hear that the competitor Zip Car is going to be coming to town soon, which may be what’s getting Flexcar to be making deals, but this one appears to be a pretty good one. Almost good enough to convince me to start driving again.

I just cancelled my flexcar membership — too many times when I rented a car but it wasn’t there, or it had a flat tire, or it was dirty, or it smelled like cigarettes, etc.
I’ve loved Flexcar most of the time I’ve had it, but will admit that I’ve recently been having the rather consistent problem of people either not returning their cars on time (and I’m not talking 5 minutes late, which I can understand, I’m talking 15-30 or more minutes), which seriously screws up my schedule, or people taking the wrong car. How do you reserve a car for one location, and go to the other? They obviously can read, they’re making a reservation…!
I wish this only happened at one location, or infrequently, but I think something like the last 5 or 6 times I’ve used the service, I’ve had one of these two problems.
I’m going to check and see what kind of car service like this is available in Albany, but to be honest, I think I’m about ready to make the switch back to owning my own car.
Heavens…now I see why they’re being so friendly.
