What’s the difference between Seattle and Salt Lake City? There are many differences, of course, but here’s one you might not know. In Seattle, there are nearly 45% more dogs than children. In Salt Lake City, there are nearly 19% more kids than dogs.

Wow, that’s a lot of dogs. It fits pretty well with my own experience, I have to say: the couples I know have been acquiring puppies at a rapid clip lately, and nary a baby to be seen.

There’s growing interest in this whole demography-and-politics thing, and the thesis that the liberal cause is doomed in the United States because it’s the conservatives that are having more kids. What do you think about this “progressives vs. breeders” thesis? Are we doomed to Republican rule?
