Huskies Watch: 17 down, one to go

Today at 3 p.m. (Pacific Time) the Huskies will play their last regular game of the season. If they win today and if Stanford beats UCLA later this evening, the Huskies will have their first Pac-10 regular conference championship in about 21 years. These are, of course, big ifs.

Usual conference powerhouse, the University of Arizona, is the Huskies’ first obstacle. Although, Arizona has been having a lackluster season, currently in a three-way tie for third in the conference and not nationally-ranked, Washington has beaten this team on their home court only once since 1996. It doesn’t help that it’s senior day at McCale. Fans will be honoring three graduating seniors with a “Red Out” in the stands creating more pressure and hostility for Washington.

The good news, though, is that the Huskies have been playing very well as of late. Brandon Roy has led the team on a seven-game winning streak. Defense has finally picked up, making the team more well-rounded and hard to beat. Plus, it seems the Huskies have played their best this season when they were not expected to win, such as in their wins over curent conference leader UCLA in both of their match-ups.

Oh and if the national and conference standing implications weren’t enough for you to get into this game, there’s also the fact that these teams play great together. In fact, if today’s game even comes marginally close to the nail-biting, down to the wire scrap that took place on New Year’s Eve earlier this season, a double-overtime loss for the Huskies, it’d still be awesome for us college-ball fans.

Man, I hope I have the nerves to watch it, I almost lost a finger last time. The game will be broadcast live on FSN.

Go Huskies!
