St. David’s Day

Today is the national day of Wales, St. David’s Day. While it’s a state holiday in Pennsylvania (with towns with names like Bala Cynwyd, Bryn Mawr, and St. David’s), here in Washington we have such a small Welsh population that it isn’t anywhere near the big deal that another Celtic nation’s patron saint’s feast day is. This is mostly because St. David’s symbol is a leek, not rivers of green dye and massive beer consumption.

Seattle does have the Puget Sound Welsh Association, a organization that aims to promote Welsh culture in the region. They will be having their St. David’s Day celebrations on Sunday at 2:30 in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (right next to the scenic I-5/NE 85th interchange). It will feature lots of singing and “Welsh tea,” meaning you will get Welsh teacakes, sweets that get plastered directly on the walls of your aorta. But trust me, the singing is good. The Welsh may not have the musicians of the Irish, but they can certainly out-choir them.

It sounds to me like there’s a bit of sour grapes here… ok so the Welsh have tea and artery clogging sweets, not massive beer consumption… and the Irish have excellent music and dance, but the Welsh can out choir them… ok then, way to go… here’s to celebrating the celtic differences and not being petty about it. Cheers to you buddy, I hope that it was everything that you hoped for. Oh, and no I am not Irish or Welsh.
