No Summer Nights this year

The P-I is reporting that One Reel has cancelled this year’s Summer Nights concert series.

Details are still sketchy, but apparently One Reel was prevented from moving the show to Gasworks Park as planned due to neighborhood protests. Specifically, a neighborhood organization called “Friends of Gasworks Park” apparently filed a lawsuit that prevented One Reel from finalizing arrangements, claiming they didn’t do sufficient ‘environmental impact” study.

Understandable concerns? Or classic NIMBYism?

    Typical Seattlitte NIMBY bullshit.

My first inclination was to call the ‘Friends of Gasworks’ rabid protectionists, scuttling a good concert series on environmental pretexts because they feared a little noise and traffic.

But then, I remembered that I never went to concerts at the Pier because they were just too expensive … and I remembered the talk of establishing a no-boat-zone on Lake Union to keep people from *gasp* hearing without paying … and then I remembered that I love runing down to Gasworks to hang out on summer evenings.

All of these things make me more critical of the (seemingly rushed) decision to move the series to Gasworks.
