Get a head start on the Bumbershoot complaints!

The fine folks at One Reel (whom I adore even though they turn down my request for a press pass every year) have announced the dates for this year’s Bumbershoot festival.

Yes, kids, of course it’s still being held on Labor Day Weekend but this year it’s only three days (Saturday, Sunday, and Monday) instead of four. Festival producer Heather Smith is quoted on the site as saying

“We decided to consolidate every single programming dollar into three days instead of four for maximum impact. We’re trying to achieve a virtual explosion of artistry in the three-day weekend so we can give our audience an amazing experience.”

. No word on how this will affect ticket prices.

SIFF (Seattle International Film Festival) will curate the 11th Annual 1 Reel Film Festival. Urban Craft Uprising, the geniius producers of I Heart Rummage, will showcase crafters and designers in a “re-imagined” art market.

Lineups, ticket prices, and other festival information will be released in the spring, as usual.

Somehow I’d be surprised if prices dropped substantially. Maybe they will though. It would be a nice way to combat the annual complaints about the rising cost of festival attendance.

The main question that I have is about how this will change the headliner situation. It always seems like there’s one weird/weak mainstage evening show. Maybe reducing it to three days will help with that?

I’d be surprised if ticket prices dropped at all, honestly. I’m sure it costs a fortune to put on the festival as it is; I’d actually rather see a smaller, more homespun festival but I think those days are long past over. I really think it’s going to take en masse avoidance of the fest to make them rethink pricing at all and I don’t see that happening any time soon.

I think you have a good point about the weak headliner so it’ll be interesting to see how that goes.

I’m way more excited about the crafts now than I have been in, oh, many years now. The I Heart Rummage people have managed to get exposure for a lot of smaller artists and crafters whose work is a little more diverse than the same people selling the same old same old every year at every single festival out there.
