Of Mexican places and tequila

Dustin, over at the Rain City Real Estate Guide, recommends Oaxaca in Ballard as the best Mexican food in town.

He is right. (So is Seattle Pulse, which Dustin cites.) It’s a tiny, hole-in-the-wall place, always overcrowded, with fantastic pollo con mole poblano and quesadillas. Don’t forget to try the salsa bar as well.

One correction, though. Seattle Pulse claims that Oaxaca serves the best margarita in town. That may be true, but margaritas are gringo drinks. What you want to order at Oaxaca are tequila shots. Order the good stuff and learn what a real tequila should taste like.

If you absolutely have to have a margarita, skip Oaxaca and hit El Gallito in Madison Valley. The food, though excellent, isn’t quite as good as Oaxaca. But the margaritas are the best in town, and they’re cheap.

“El Gallito” to put is simply, sucks. The food is waaaay over-rated, the service borders on indifferent, and the margarita’s are nothing special.

Stick to Oaxaca for the food and the tequilla. If you want a good margarita, head over to Tia Lou’s in Belltown (order a double).
