Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Code Black! Seahawks Lose Super Bowl! (season 2, episode 16)

take that nicolette sheridan. grey’s anatomy appeals to the superbowl demographic
Although I think Seattleites would agree that “code black” ought to be the code name for the Seahawks losing the Super Bowl, it actually involves Alex and Izzy getting it on, the Nazi about to give birth, a guest appearance by Christina Ricci, and other events marking The End of the World as We Know It (Part 1) . . .
[Hi, it's Ellen again. Josh was in the air during this episode. And barring extreme boredom on his part, you can expect me to do the summaries of Grey's Anatomy until he gets back from Amsterdam in March.]
Shot is of Meredith and Dempsey in the OR, all white light, and she is crying. A single tear running down her cheek. The sound of flatlining.
It’s a look patients get in their eyes. There’s a scent, a smell of death. Some kind of sixth sense. When the great beyond is headed for you, you hear it coming. What’s the one thing you’ve always dreamed of doing before you die?
Meredith and Izzy are in the shower together, shortly joined by SO. Their hair and makeup look perfect, they’re lathering each other, caressing each other, almost making out. No, code black does not mean sudden changes in sexual orientation–this is a dream sequence. And it doesn’t belong to Meredith.
Okay, hello, clearly not my dream.
Yes, it’s George’s dream. He comes to the door, ready to join the fetching interns. George, SO whispers.
Izzy: You’re the strongest, most masculine man I have ever met.
SO: You’re smarter than me, and you have really great hair.
Meredith: I’m in love with you George. I always have been, and I always will be.
He enters the shower and drops his towel. And drops out of bed.
See, I told you. Not my dream.
Izzy enters George’s room sneezing (sexy) with a box of Super Bran (also sexy) and informs him that he needs to learn to use the plunger or else start “crapping” in the backyard. That’s gross, and she’s the one with the box of Super Bran.
Grey wants to stay home in bed, but Izzy points out that she is an intern, and thus has to go save some lives today. George addresses Meredith as “Mer” (have we heard this before? yet another nickname?) George tries to entice Mer out of bed with talk of a horrible accident and craniotomies, but she doesn’t care about surgeries! I think we’ve all had these days. Suddenly SO is there, and asking Mer if she has “a feeling.” She does–the feeling that she’s going to die. SO wonders if this is immediate, and notes they will all die someday. But Mer insists it’s more serious. SO attempts to be supportive by sitting on the bed, flipping her hair, and listening. Mer recites her pain: The man she loves has a wife, who he choose over her, and then the wife takes the dog! She’s got her McDreamy, McDog, and McLife. Mer has nothing. She can’t remember the last time they kissed–you think you have forever but you don’t. Perhaps she’s suffering from SAD? Also her conditioner stopped working and she might have brittle bones. She needs a sign that things will change, some hope, or she’s going to stay in bed. Yes, we all know these days. SO tells her to get her ass out of bed. She even kicks her–literally–out of bed. Maybe this was the sign she needed.
Tourism Dep’t shot: Space Needle, sans orange paint and 12th man flag.
At the venerable Seattle Grace, Burke comes up to the Chief ruminating over a quiet board–apparently the sign of trouble. Dempsey joins them and discusses the horrible ominous sign that is the quiet board. Trouble! Death! Bad news! The Chief walks away, leaving Dempsey to ask Burke if they can’t call each other by their first names (Burke–Shepard

McScreamy confers with the Chief, and we see Alex in the background (done having sex with Izzy, presumably, I wonder if he managed to perform this time?). The Chief says that they’re going to try to save McScreamy’s husband, but they also need to retrieve the device. She starts to cry, realizing that her husband will probably die. The Chief asks Alex to get McScreamy a coffee (this always makes me feel better). McScreamy takes solace in the notion that things can’t get any worse.
George goes to talk to Bailey. She’s got her stuff strewn on the bed and wants her suitcase, because she’s going home. She’s having a baby, but not today, not like this. Except that she’s in labor. And in a lot of pain.
SO and Mer look in on Burke and the bomb squad. They wonder how this is going to work. SO looks in on patient #1, and notices that Dr. Drunk has left. CR-EMT is freaking out because Dr. Drunk left. The annoying twins start talking to her, and she announces her intention to take her hand out. with the Bomb Squad, Burke thinks it might not be as bad as it seems. Bomb Squad Dylan says CR-EMT’s hand is holding the device steady, but Burke thinks her hand might just be “in there” with the ammo. The device is homemade and might be unstable, it might be a dud. And Dempsey is next door with the exposed brain of Bailey’s husband and refusing to leave. This is as bad as it seems. SO calls for help. The annoying twins are trying to convince CR-EMT not to move, but she’s 22, panicking, and wants to leave. Mer won’t go. Eventually CR-EMT pulls her hand out–but Mer puts her hand right in there as CR-EMT runs out and everyone else ducks. Mer just stares at her hands, says oh god, and wonders what she has done.
Next Episode Preview: Addy tells George to stop asking what they’re going to do. Mer has her hand on a bomb, and they have to move the patient. Bailey is angry, and Addison warns they might lose the baby. Meanwhile, the Chief has a heart attack. Dempsey asks SO for an update on “the girl with the bomb,” SO tells him it’s Meredith with her hand on the bomb, and we hear the sound of someone (who?) flatlining. McScreamy was wrong: Things could get worse.

I really enjoy how all of the episodes are officially named after song lyrics, in the style of One Tree Hill.
Thank you so much for this thorough (sp?) review. My DVR stopped recrding at 11 and I missed the ending. What a relief to find your blog.
Grey’s Anatomy is currently my favorite t.v. show and this is a very VERY good recap. I can’t wait to see what’ll happen next week. But one question though; why do you refer Sandra Oh as herself instead of her character, Christina?
Lizzie: Thanks!
As for referring to Sandra Oh by her initials (and Patrick Dempsey by his last name) rather than their character names–just for fun.
George has been calling her Mer for a while now…
I’m sooo glad I found this blog. I was very mad when my DVR only recorded the first half b/c of the lame superbowl. Thanks for this website!!!
My name is Julia L and I eat poop but i really like this show. thanks, because i came home wasted from the superbowl and forgot to watch and record it!
dan rules!
re: group health on 15th, I have yet to visit, but if that’s their inspiration it’s nice that they’re taking things from all of the area hospitals and not leaving anyone out.
re: Alex & Izzie’s code black, I expect that we can assume that performance anxietites became less of a problem after passing his big medical test.
Oh, i think it’s cool that you do that because Sandra Oh is a really good actress and Patrick Dempsey is “McDreamy”..
