metroblogging interview: ‘blog on the run, uptown moves uphill
Last week, “j” and “k” abandoned their condo on the shore of Elliott Bay, which also meant calling it quits for Uptown Seattle. Along with the 2.3 mile move across town to the higher grounds of Capitol Hill, they fired up a brand new weblog to match their change of address. Keep up with their adventures in the new ‘hood at capitolhillseattle.blogspot.com.
Despite the hectic pace of city life and setting up a new homestead, J was able to fit in a Metroblogging Interview. The following conversation took place by e-mail between 18 and 19 January:
Josh: How are you coping with the change in address? Any altitude sickness?
J: Re: the address, we usually write those kinds of things down. No issues with altitude but K has some attitude problems lately. We’re sure it will pass. And J has a bad case of yuppieitis also known as moderate boredom. This is urban suburbia — fewer reasons to get drunk outside of your own home. Though the Canterbury does have shufflepuck.
Is there really both a K and a J, or is that a convenient fiction to justify the use of the editorial we?
There is. We mean, there are. It’s been fun trying to write as a team but, like most chores, one of us does write a little more than the other one. Is there really a Josh or are you nuts?
Er, let’s just say that sometimes the answer to an either/or question can be “both” and leave it at that. It looks like you’ve already formed a cafe alliance. Good move. How long before the peaceful détente on 15th turns into a bloody caffeine-fueled gang war?
It goes way beyond 15th but we’re Switzerland in this. We drink enough $3 lattes to keep them all happy. Shout out to our homeys at Fuel. We’re completely unbiased. Tully’s sucks. We’re pretty sure the only thing to worry about up here is the occasional car prowl and these giant, man-sized racoons we saw come running out of our backyard. Vios, we love you [#].
What was the real reason for the move? Was it really a family values decision, or were your getting out before property values plummeted as all hopes for a monorail turned to dust? Or just to secure high ground before the polar ice caps melt and turn the shores of Elliott Bay into a modern day Atlantis?
You’ve read about ‘liquefaction,’ right? Wikipedia defines it as ‘what will happen to Belltown.’ {Ed: the wikipedia entry [#] makes no reference to Belltown –goddamn citizen editors.} We agree. Don’t make it sound like some icky GOP thing. We needed a bigger place to breed in. That’s the icky thing. This is also the ultimate bullshit call on our friends who live up here who have said we need to live here too. We’re expecting a lot of friendly stuff like key parties.
You wrote that the first (and only) neighborly gesture since your move was from the gays at Queen City Cruise News. Are you concerned that your pants aren’t fancy enough for your brick and mortar neighbors?
Our pants are extremely fancy — organic Certified jeans from Renton! The neighbors probably know we won’t like them anyway so why bother. But we plan to borrow the occasional cup of sugar and leave our car alarm on all night from time to time so I’m sure we’ll make friends eventually.
Have you been back to the uptown part of town yet? What’s likely to be the first thing to draw you back to the old ‘hood?
I’m sure Macrina will be the bait that brings us back repeatedly but we really do miss the neighborhood and being able to walk everywhere and occasionally stagger home through the Belltown goofiness. We loved it and would have liked to stay. Waking up to Elliott Bay and the Olympics was a great way to start the day. It’s just not a place where most of us can afford a home big enough for a family. And that’s OK, Peter Steinbrueck, you can relax. Improvement like the Olympic Sculpture Park will draw families and all sorts of people into the city — they all don’t need to own a home downtown, too. That’s what the neighborhoods are for, we’ve decided. That’s why we’re on Capitol Hill.
Thanks for the interview & welcome to the neighborhood!

That map shows the actual route that I fly in my helicopter when I want to visit the old blog. Thanks for noting our move. We’re trying to cook up a post worthy of the attention. Item, item, who’s got an item…
Aw, I do miss the canterbury and the ladro baristas. Welcome to my old hood! :)
What? Our pants aren’t fancy enough to deserve a link or even one of those little “#” things when you mention our name? Sigh.
Please forgive the oversight, the interview formatting was done in haste. I’ve updated the post to include a link of the fully underlined text variety.
Thanks, Josh.
