That Pike Place Market Allure

Truly, I don’t wish to go to Seattle unless I really really have to. Just recently, the rain has been unusually heavy. It was actually a topic of conversation tonight, with the “local” Seattlers telling the recent transplants that we’re all for a light drizzle from October to March, but this rain? This is like, East Coast rain or something. This is “houses sliding off a cliff” rain. As I drove over to my local Starbucks tonight (the one I wish everyone else would avoid instead of making it so crowded), I actually had to turn my windshield wipers from “Intermittent” to “Regular”.

As I lay in bed last night listening to the rain pound down on the roof, and swish by in the gutters before thundering down the drainpipe, I wondered if people tend to pee more during the winter. You know how they say that the sound of water makes you want to pee? Well, this is a LOT of water. And up in the mountains, they were getting dumped on, too — something about 20 inches of snow, an inch an hour? How do you see to ski?

But I digress. I don’t want to go over the bridge in the pouring rain in the same way I don’t want to be out driving on New Year’s Eve — all the maniacs out there who have apparently never driven in rain before, ever. But I don’t know how I’m going to be able to resist this pair of Pike Place Market charmers.

  • For the month of January, Campagne Restaurant‘s 20 BUCK DUCK — Chef Daisley Gordon’s two course canard menu. “Begin with Duck liver terrine served with duck gizzard confit and watercress salad,” the website urges you, “followed by Duck leg confit with root vegetable gratin and natural jus” (and remember, I’ve had the confit before, and it’s confitlicious). “In addition, Directeur du vin, Jake Kosseff offers an elegant wine pairing of NV Maison Vergnes Les Berceau Blanquette de Limoux and 2003 Domaine Magellan Le Fruit Défendu VdP de Côtes de Thongues for $10″. You had me at QUACK.
  • Every Sunday, down the street at the Pink Door for the month of January, they’re showing Fellini movies, you get to taste 3 different wines, AND pig out at the antipasto bar. What’s not to like? All this for $20! And if you like that, you’ll love February’s theme: Sex and Food movies. Nothing like watching food on the big screen to get you to pig out even more.
