This Week in Books

Ever-popular Jared Diamond will be at Town Hall this Thursday, January 12th, at both 5:30 and 8pm to discuss his new book, Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed.

According to the Town Hall website,

Why do societies fall apart? In his global bestseller Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared Diamond examined why some civilizations flourish. His new book, Collapse, looks at the other side of the coin. What happened to the Anasazi? The Viking colonies of Greenland? Rwanda? Diamond returns to Town Hall to talk about reasons for the collapse of these and other societies.

Tickets are $5 at the door only, for the first show starting at 4:30 and for the second starting at 7 pm. Town Hall members receive priority seating.

Also this week, Heather Sharfeddin will be reading and signing her new book, Blackbelly, on Tuesday the 10th at 7pm at the U-Dist store. Thursday has two other events competing with Diamond: at the Bellevue store, Steve Lowe, the Public Information Specialist for the Seattle Symphony, will be discussing Mozart, while Pontoon 8 will be participating in Floating Bridge Press’s yearly anthology of poetry readings at the main University bookstore, also at 7pm.

Does the title of this post imply this will be a weekly occurrence? Or maybe it’s just referring to *this* week.

    If weekly: Cool.

Indeed, it is a new, weekly project I’m taking on. :)

Yes it does, Josh, which means I am actually going to back out of our metblogs meeting. I made the “mistake” of both sending the information to my department mailing list and then voicing my opinion on Guns, Germs, and Steel. One impromptu department gathering later, we’re going to descend on Town Hall as a group, then go out and drink and argue after the lecture.

    So er… I suck?
