New Park: I-5 Colonnade
Right now, a couple of dozen yards from where my still pajama-clad lazy behind sits, the city is opening a new park. It sounds like there might be a band over there.
For months, as I’ve scampered under the interstate from my apartment in order to climb two hills to catch a bus to Capitol Hill, I’ve passed what has appeared to be a bunch of mud quilted by Honey Buckets and homeless guys. (Eastlake is a great neighborhood, it’s just hard to get anywhere from here.) But no longer. Now the space under the freeway features an off-leash dogpark, some picnic space, and what will soon be an urban mountain biking course [P-I].
On my way home from my neighborhood bar last night, I took a peek up there. It’s still pretty barren, largely empty dirt spaces and little shrubs. Evidently, they’ve put sprinklers up under the overpass, which will combine with the lights to mimic the daily weather patterns in 1960, back before I-5 cut us off from the rest of the city. It’s an interesting little park, and it fits in my neighborhood–we’re the ones with the pavement inlays of parasites and molds.
The I-5 Colonnade (which is, I have to say, a rotten name for a park) hasn’t gotten a whole lot of media attention during its construction. And that’s just fine with us. But you should still stop by and take a look. It’s located underneath I-5 after the Lakeview exit. And hey, if you tell me you’re coming, maybe I’ll take you out for a beer.
