Who the hell is Laura Veirs, and does anyone care?
It’s not normal for Metblogs to highlight a concert four days before the event, but I feel a need to make some noise about singer/songwriter Laura Veirs. You see, Laura is big in Europe and loved by critics. Morning Becomes Eclectic, KCRW’s great and glorious purveyor of musical greatness, had her on for a live set this morning. Her sparse musical arrangements and dense lyrics have her branded as an intelligent, dark up-and-comer in the so-called “folk” field that’s shorthand for “a girl with a guitar no matter what she plays.” Anyway, she’s getting a lot of buzz in a lot of places.
Except Seattle.
Where she lives.
It seems odd that for a town that trumpets anyone with a Seattle zip code in their USPS mailing history (or heck, Olympia or Tacoma) would virtually ignore her.
So, this is an early call to get to the Tractor Tavern on Saturday night at 7pm for Laura’s big tour-closing CD release party. Tickets are a decent $12. And maybe you can tell me why she’s not getting any love from the Times or P-I.

you’re right. It’s really bizarre. I heard about Laura Viers from about everywhere but Seattle. When I finally noticed that she’s from Seattle, I was really surprised.
My guess is that it’s the “folk” label, which I don’t think is completely justified.
Thanks a lot for the recommend! After listening to some of her songs on the website, I realized that it’s been a while since a female artist has impressed me that much.
