Pumpkin Pie Sighting – Queen Anne Cafe Ladro

With an 8am Monday morning meeting on lower Queen Anne today (ouch), I was looking for a spot to caffeinate and check E-mail. I ended up at Cafe Ladro on Queen Anne where I saw a pumpkin pie so enormous I absolutely had to have a slice. I’m a pumpkin pie aficionado, and I must say that this pie is in the top five I’ve ever had. It’s not quite Aunt Leslie’s superior home made pumpkin pie, but it’s VERY close. I should also add that Ladro is one of the better cups of coffee to be had in the city.

By the way, if you’re meeting someone at Ladro, never say “meet me at the Ladro on Queen Anne”. There are two such shops, as I discovered one day four years ago. I was waiting at the Cafe Ladro on Queen Anne Ave at the bottom of the hill. The group I was meeting was 10 odd blocks away on Queen Anne Ave at the top of the hill.

This reminds me, The Seattle Stranger published an interesting article about Ladro and their history of warfare with Starbucks Coffee in 2002. It’s quite an interesting read.

Argh! I miss pumpkin pie. Back in my pre-vegan days, I made a really mean pumpkin pie. I’ve tried, but this is one thing I haven’t been able to find a decent vegan substitute for. We bought a vegan pumpkin pie at Madison Market last year, made by Flying Apron Bakery, but it was really awful. (Not only vegan, but also a wheat-free crust. Feh.) I guess the sad truth is that you really can’t make a proper custard without eggs …

And, yes — big thumbs up on Caffe Ladro’s coffee. Yum.

Obvious suggestion here – have you tried the Globe cafe near 13th and Pine? If anywhere has good vegan pumpkin pie, it’ll be them. I seem to recall they have quite an assortment of spectacular vegan deserts.

You can also order whole pies at Ladro. You need to give them 2-3 days notice and they are a bit spendy, but oh so good!

hm… with the family about to descend upon my home for thanksgiving, that’s a tempting thought.
