Friday Afternoon Discussion #2: Transportation
Let’s say an eccentric billionaire handed you $20B in cash and told you to build out the Seattle mass-transit system infrastructure. The only catch is that you can only choose one of four methods of improvement (no multi-modal systems allowed):
- Light Rail
- Monorail
- Bus-related improvements (including bus-only lanes, high-speed express buses)
- Road-related improvements (including freeway rebuilds, new freeways and bridges, and more travel lanes)
Which method of improvement would you choose? Why? Is there one that’s not listed that you would implore the eccentric billionaire to consider?

Whenever I used to play Simcity, and used the cheat that maxed out my money (heh), I always build the light rail. And never had ANY congestion/traffic problems.
Of course, this also meant that there were no roads, simply because I refused to build them. They always caused problems.
SO, my solution is to create an ultimately splendiforous light rail system, and destroy all roads.
Or have flying cars. We were promised flying cars.
Doesn’t light rail have a bit of a problem with hills?
