Are photo booths vintage or just retro?

Still from Superman III

No matter how old I get, I still find photo booths hard to resist. They remind me of being thirteen and hanging out at the mall, of trying to squish three or four giggling girlfriends into a space designed for two people.

Unfortunately, real four-photo booths are becoming hard to find. I had hoped that they would make a comeback after “Amelie,” but that has not been the case so far. Photobooth.net is a pretty good resource for tracking down what photo booths are left, but I want more. I’ve already visited and documented the one at Jillian’s [#], and I’ve heard about the one at Archie McPhee’s, but has anyone actually seen any others? (I know that there’s a black and white one at the Showbox, but when I was there last Monday I was too busy trying to figure out the logistics of fitting five people in it to remember to take a picture of it.) If the flame of the photo booth is going to be kept alive anywhere, it might as well be right here.

Let me know about your photo booth sightings, please, and if you’ve tried them and how well they came out.

There was one in Third Place Books at Lake Forest Park three years ago when I worked nearby, and I can’t imagine they’d have gotten rid of it.

There used to be one in the Broadway Market, before the big remodel. It was upstairs near Gold’s Gym. Next time I head over there to pick up a gyro, I’ll check!

there’s one at the Bad Juju part of Neumo’s; and I’m pretty sure that the one at the Broadway Market is still there.

A photo booth does indeed still reside at Broadway Market…uppermost level near Ticket Ticket. I have not tried it…

You guys are the best. Now I just have to guilt someone into going to visit them all with me.

If you can wait until Christmas, we could do the McPhee one together.

If you can’t, then you can certainly guilt me into going to McPhee.

There are actually about 40 classic photo booths in the greater Seattle area with plans to place more in the near future. The photo booths are actually making a big comeback and we have them rented out almost every week for wedding receptions and corporate parties.

Trying to find information on an old antique photo booth my uncle had when I was a kid, (am 63 now). He said he worked it with his uncle when he was 18. It took two people to operate it. One stood outside and operated the shutter as the patrons posed inside and one was inside the booth and that person developed the pictures and then slid them out thru a slot in the side. I remember my uncle setting up at local festivals and celebrations. The photo booth is still sitting in his basement. Since his death several years ago at 84, his daughter is trying to find out more information on this photo booth. Can anyone help.?

There’s now a old-fashioned photo booth at the Showbox, right next to the Coat Check.

This message is for Will Simmonds, who didn’t leave an email link. You said there are about 40 in the Seattle area?? Do you have a list of those locations??? That would be great!

Here are a few more locations of the classic style photo booths.

Macy’s in Northgate, the Downtown store, Federal Way store, Southcenter, and Tacoma Mall – all of these booths are located in the Juniors Dept.

Earl’s On the Ave, Fun House Bar across from the Seattle Center, the Rebar, Jillians, Tommy’s Bar, and the Ducheses.

Galore – clothing store on Broadway, Pretty Parlor store near Broadway, and Private Screening in Fremont.

Hope the list helps! Let me know if you want any more – I’ve got places in the Tacoma area if anyone is interested.
