More Seattle honors
In the interest of pointing out more laurels that our fine city is receiving, you should know that one of our local Nobel Prize winners, Dr. Leland Hartwell, will be honored with the Association of American Cancer Institutes’ Distinguished Scientist Award at their yearly meeting next weekend in Arlington, V.A. The AACI is a collection of 85 national academic and freestanding cancer research centers, and each year they honor one scientist.
Dr. Hartwell was awarded 1/3 of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2001 for his discoveries relating to the mechanisms of cell division. He’s currently the director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and he even has his own day.
