trolley: has a good home

rogers_trolley_web.jpg Miraculously enough, the historic waterfront streetcar (a.k.a., the public transit project that time forgot) has been saved from the doom that seemed certain to crush it’s old timey charm this spring. From the sounds of Ron Sims’s press release [metrokc] this seems like a win-win situation all around. The Olympic Sculpture Park, which found a trolley barn far too much of a blemish to remain on it’s property (after all, classical male nudes and maintenance are like oil and vinegar), wins by evicting the blight and preserving sightlines for its waterfront vistas.

As for the streetcar, a new home in Pioneer Square (a neighborhood better suited to historic preservation) means doesn’t roll off into the shadows of history. On top of that, the city and other overseeing entities save cash by building the barn near Occidental park. The only losers in this streetfight are the people that would prefer to ride the streetcar instead of a no fare specially-decorated Metro bus during the two year construction of the park.

Take your last streetcar ride before 19 November. A week after that, keep your eye out for a barn-crushing party.
