In pursuit of trivia
Now that the mercury is taking a dive (49 degrees this a.m.!) it’s time to start pursuing indoor activities. There are, of course, plenty of things to do in this town, but my personal favorite is Pub Trivia night at The Celtic Swell. Cold beer, great service, and fantastic location are great features in and of themselves, but tack on general fun and prizes and you’ve got yourself a situation that can’t be beat. At the Swell, trivia is on Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. There are three rounds of general knowledge questions followed by a fourth round of music lyrics or movie quotes. There is no admission charge and prizes are awarded to the top three teams (up to 6 people per team). I highly recommend the experience.
Now I do understand though that Alki Beach might be a bit of a hike for some, so I put together a list of other area pubs that offer trivia nights.
Mondays:
Irish Emigrant (U. District) 7:30 p.m.
Celtic Bayou (Redmond) 8:30 p.m.
O’Shea’s Easy Street (Wallingford) 8 p.m.
Tuesdays:
Celtic Swell (Alki Beach) 8:30 p.m.
George & Dragon (Fremont) 8 p.m.
Wednesdays:
Molly Maguire’s (Ballard) 9 p.m.
Fado (Pioneer Sq./Downtown) 6:30 p.m.
If you know of another place to play, please add to the list via the comment section.

For those not wanting to hike to Alki, I’ll add an endorsement for the Irish Emigrant’s pub quiz! It usually starts around 8, costs $2 per person, includes an A to Z(ed) general trivia, a BINGO round, and occasionally requires participants to identify celebrities from distorted photos, take an SAT-style (penalties for wrong answers) multiple-choice test, or determine the hidden link between questions.
The food is tasty, well drinks are $2, the host is Irish, and there are multiple cash prizes (overall and BINGO winners). If there enough people playing, the best of the worst even have a chance to win money, too.
The Hopvine Pub on 15th Avenue East has a great trivia night on the second Tuesday of each month. The relative infrequency leads to lots of regulars, and lots of rivalries.
There’s trivia in the Liquid Lounge at the EMP every Wednesday at 7 pm (although it will be starting at 8 pm for the next 3 weeks).
Happy hour until 9 pm, great questions, gift certificates for the winners (and cans of Clamato for the losers!), and karaoke afterwards. It’s great!
I forgot–there’s also trivia at the Redhook brewery in Woodinville every Tuesday night at 8 pm. ($3.00 pints / $9 pitchers during trivia.)
The Hopvine does hold a great trivia night! They have been so wonderful to our nonprofit publication, Rivet. They occasionally hold a trivia night for the magazine, the next one is on Nov. 1st. Check it out!
I also meant to mention that the Ravenna Ale House has a fledgling quiz night on Wednesdays. The upside being that the bar is smoke free. Cash and quirky prizes.

Also in the U-District, Finn MacCool’s has a quiz on Monday nights at 9 pm, several short category-focused rounds that aren’t completely impossible.
. . . and for complete masochists, Murphy’s in Wallingford used to be the place to go to feel completely clueless about most obscure topics on a Tuesday night. I hear that they’ve changed hosts since the dark ages when my friends and I used to go there, back before our spirits were crushed by impossible questions.
There’s trivia in Ballard at the Old Pequliar on Market St.
Tuesdays at 8. Cash and prizes. Good set of questions.
The Ram in the U Distric also has trivia on Mondays (Hollywood Trivia 10pm to 1am Flip it good. 25c drinks if you win the coin toss. Otherwise $2.50 well drinks.)
The Boxcar in Magnolia has trivia every Tuesday night. Cheap PBR’s and there is a different host every week. Starts at 8pm.
Is there other related links to this blog page?
The trivia at Murphy’s is now called “Idiot Trivia” so I think it’s been toned down a bit in difficulty. Tuesdays 8:00 or 8:30.
Norm’s in Fremont hosts trivia on Thursdays at 8:30, but is always completely packed. Get there a couple hours early if you want to play, no joke.
Looks like this comment thread might have died out, but I co-host trivia night every Tuesday at Clever Dunne’s Irish House (1501 E Olive Way on Cap. Hill) starting at 8:30. It’s free to play and we give out cash and prizes. We offer beer specials and a great crowd.
Just tell ‘em the Reverends sent you.
The Boxcar Ale House has great trivia every Tuesday night at 8:00. They also have an ESPN Zone like 106″ High Def. Projection System and several other 50″ HD viewing screens. They Do Match the pot trivia Tuesdays and Karaoke on Thursdays and Saturdays that is unbeatable. Great Sound, 20,000 songs and topgrade wireless microphones. They have a great pool table and a cool younger crowd that hangs out. The Adress is 3407 Gilman Ave W in Seattle on Magnolia. Phone 206 286-6000. Good Luck and Happy Trivia!!!
