another night, another battle

Continuing along this fall’s theme, tonight again brings a conflict for those interested in yet another round of great shows. Samantha already weighed in on tonight’s Mike Doughty show [mb] at the Showbox; so I feel that I should campaign a little bit for the Fiery Furnaces at Neumo’s [#].

I’ll start by confessing that I fell in love with the band for all the wrong reasons: a picture in Under the Radar’s protest auction [#]. Beyond their cute donkey sign, they turn out to be a pretty great band. Unlike a certain other two-pieces that pretend to be siblings for some weird publicity angle, Matt and Eleanor Friedberger are actually brother and sister bandleaders who make exhilaratingly great music. Last year’s Blueberry Boat, for instance, was a phenomenal blend of quirky storytelling and odd sounds in service to a collection of mini-pieces of musical theater that manage to be really interesting while remaining totally listenable. That is, seeing them live an in person promises to be completely awesome.

The other procedurally interesting thing about tonight’s show is that it is part of Neumo’s great experiment to have all ages shows that don’t banish the over-21 guests to some far off corner of the club to get a drink. At tonight’s show (and several others this week), the tables will be turned, leaving the underagers to watch from the balcony.

As a final enticement, a fansite, claims that the “guests” for tonight’s show are Swedish guitar rock sensations Dungen. I saw them a couple weeks ago at CMJ, learned how to pronounce their name (dune-yen, not dungeon), and found them strangely entertaining. I can’t tell if they’d be critical darlings if they weren’t impossibly tall and big-haired Scandinavian giants who occasionally break into prog-rock jams and flute solos, but the combined effect of all of the discontinuities is something to behold.

(update: Dungen as special guests seems increasingly unlikely since they’re scheduled to perform in Portland tonight. But they’ll be in Seattle tomorrow [neumo’s])

And in the local music news, Ruby Shuz (maybe a year old? not sure on that front) are playing Nada Mucho Monday at the Rendezvous.

Too many choices, not enough time!
