Livable and walkable
Between all the attention that Cal Anderson park has been getting lately and the ongoing monorail discussions I hear everywhere I go, I’ve found myself wondering if the Center City lecture at Benaroya on Monday is going to be a well-attended event.
Titled, “Culture, Commerce and Community: Creative Forces for a Vibrant Center City,” the lecture is described by the Department of Planning and Development website [#] as “…a discussion on the value of Seattle

My son and I were just discussing this topic today (while driving back home from Lynnwood, no less) – he remarked that he thought our downtown was pretty dead. I brought up Belltown, but he felt that Vancouver had a much more robust nightlife scene. I haven’t been there in 15 years, so I can’t say whether this is a “grass is greener” lament, or if there’s something organically different and more successful going on there.
I think our downtown is very successful as a daytime commercial center. I also think it’s enviable as a residential location (at least, I envy those who can pay $1million for a Market condo). Where it’s lacking, perhaps, and what my son was focusing on, is as a destination entertainment venue. The nighttime hotspots – Belltown, East Pike Street – are on the near periphery rather than the city center.
Thanks for the heads-up. I’ll think about attending.
