Hand-Painted Street Signs

If the future [1] of Seattle’s transportation system is looking grim [2], its past remains visible all around us. No better example than the (dwindling?) number of hand-painted street signs still in use around the city.

This example, from a block in Ravenna/Roosevelt [4] near I-5 [5] helps drivers navigate the confusion which results when a major interstate cuts right through a city [6]. Although no date is visible, it could be from as far back as 1965, when the highway was opened. Forty years later, the paint has weathered enough to expose the original brushwork.

My guess is you won’t find superscript ordinals or diamond-shaped periods on whatever sign eventually replaces it.
