Bug Blast

I am a big fan of bugs as long as they’re either dead or in a cage. It’s not really fair to the insects, I know, but I just appreciate them most when I don’t have to touch them. It’s because of my fondness for visiting the bugs in controlled areas that I find myself looking forward to tomorrow’s Bug Blast at the Burke Museum. #

While it doesn’t look like last year’s bug chef will be returning this year–and I know you’re all disappointed that there won’t be any tempura spider legs for an afternoon snack–there will be plenty to make you go, “Eeew, gross!” Scarabs: The Bug Society are the fine folks who put on this event, and their enthusiasm and general knowledge are both impressive enough to make an insect appreciator out of anyone. Bug Blast will be going on from 10:00 – 4:30 tomorrow (September 18th), with lots of hands-on activities and face painting for the kids.

Well, crap. I already need to work and go to a bridal shower tomorrow (all assuming I can haul my sick ass out of bed, which has been impossible for six days now, damned Ick); I just can’t fit this in! *pout*

Oh well. I’d be more disappointed if the chef was there… …yeah, I’m one of those people who’ll eat anything, once. (When I went to Costa Rica, I popped asthma beetles without a second thought. Very garlic-peppery, and as the name indicates, an indigenious treatment for asthma, which happened to work better than anything I’ve ever taken here in the States.)

Last year I ate some crickets with orzo and a few cruncy barbecue mealworms. The crickets tasted mostly like the peppers they had been sauteed with, but I did have a bit of trouble with their spiny legs.
I left the tempura tarantula for the kids, though. They’re all more fun to watch.
