Good Clean Fun
In a frivolous display of “here’s what we consider news” yesterday, King5 news reported on the grand opening of Lush at the Bellevue Square mall. Already open for the past two weeks, Lush staff reports that Bellevue shoppers were excited by the new addition since now they wouldn’t have to go to Vancouver for their Lush products. It’s an odd thing to say in this day and age, when you could just hop online and order whatever you want and get it delivered to your door. Or maybe it just indicates the kind of person who would like to have Lush products.
The short news byte focussed mainly on super-secret new products arriving in September to celebrate Lush’s 10th anniversary (some sort of frozen shower gel that you keep in your freezer, and cake-shaped soap) and the “bath bomb” (which is some sort of cute girly idea to dump a ball made of scent and glitter in with your bathwater, and then steep yourself in it). As well, they touted Lush’s “handmade, freshmade” philosophy, which goes as far as to identify the soapmaker for each product by name and photo.
Personally, I’ve always felt that Lush’s best seller would be the shampoo, conditioner, and combined shampoo/conditioner bars. Hey, I don’t travel a whole lot, but I do travel from time to time and I’m always afraid that the shampoo and conditioner bottles will explode and ooze through their double-bagged barrier and lay claim to the rest of my suitcase. It could happen. It never has, but it could.
Anyway, let me reiterate. Lush’s grand opening: today (5-9:30PM). Come for the goodie bags, stay for the soap.

While I’m usually similarly mystified by people who are thrilled to find brick & mortar stores that sell obscure things that they could easily purchase online (esp. w/r/t certain record stores), I can sort of see the point of being excited about Lush. After all, a big part of the prettification adventure is being able know what the product will smell like in advance, which is not a very web-translatable experience.
josh, I’m one of those people who find a good thing and stick to it. Going into Vancouver to find a product you like, I can understand. Repeated journeys into Vancouver? Now I think you’re just making up excuses to go to Vancouver.
Well, I’m terribly excited to have Lush, even though it will still be a rare treat for me. I have some scent allergies that trigger my asthma, so being able to smell the stuff before buying is a godsend. Not to mention, the store is just an incredibly visceral experience; it’s a total sensory experience to go.
But, I’m one of those girls who likes the girly balls of fluff and glitter to steep in, and the frozen bath gel was one of the few things that got me comfortably through this summer. ;)
Kelly, I’m so glad to hear from you. I’d love to find out whether the glitter stays on you (I assume that’s the point of having glitter), or does it get wiped off onto your towels and transferred to the rest of your laundry.
Skye - the glitter actually tends to just wash off; no sticking. But they do make a fabulous holidy… well, it’s basically like one of their shampoo pucks, but it’s nearly solid glitter. You rub it in your hair, and it has remarkable staying power. And sooooo pretty.
Lush is one of those stores where I can (and do) spend way too much money. I Love Juicy is the best thing for waking me up in the morning (a really *bright* citrusy shampoo).
…and yes, I am still around. :) I was sorry to miss happy hour this month, but I’ve been feeling under the weather and actually slept thru the event!
Oh - and the point of the glitter is to have a sparkly bath. ;) It just makes me smile. I really like the rose petal bombs, too.
darn it! I really thought the point of the glitter was to have sparkly skin! Now I’m all disappointed. ;)
