Although certain Metblog authors1 have lamented the destruction of the U.S. Bank on the corner of Olive and Broadway, I don’t feel a particular sentimental attachment to the site. It’s not as if the guys from Streetbeat! even show up anymore since they won their big award [mb]. No, I just think it’s kind of cool to see a building without walls. [flickr] Heavy equipment was on site this morning; so the remaining structure might not survive until sunset.

1. Maybe Peter will write a fitting eulogy?

I think that’s actually the US Bank, not the Bank of America.

Thanks. I think you’re right. I always get those two confused — it would be so much easier if they’d merge to become the U.S. Bank of America.

    I’ll edit everywhere.

Although all of us mourn the loss of another mid-century modern, the replacement building could be pretty interesting. There’s a lot of info here. US Bank (of America) will be returning as a ground-floor tenant, and the upper 3 stories will be residential. (Condo?) In addition, there’s gonna be a clock! How delightfully analog. Other highlights:

The upper levels color is a deep blue grey, while the bottom two stories will be more prominently grey. Masonry veneer will be placed beneath the commercial space windows along Olive Way. Canvas type canopies will be placed above the commercial spaces along both streets, including the residential stairwell wall on Broadway.

Peter: that is an amazing amount of detail! I’m surprised that they aren’t going to take advantage of the change in height restrictions.
