Elvis Costello, about to enter the building mainstage.

When Devo and Ani DiFranco [independently] cancelled their summer tours and left Bumbershoot with two open headliner slots, I was cautiously optimistic [mb]. So far, it looks like that bit of positive thinking has been partially validated. OneReel has just announced that the Sunday night headliner will be Elvis Costello, who will be doing a solo show on the mainstage.

After bursting out of the British punk and new wave scene in 1977, Elvis Costello embarked on a recording career that has lasted for more than 25 years and crossed into almost every musical genre possible. He is a renowned, acclaimed, influential, beloved, and a legendary artist. [bumbershoot]

While I realize that there must be some disappointed Ani fans who are still getting over her absence from the festival, this seems like a really exciting improvement to the lineup. Those looking to prepare for his show might check out the extensive collection of audio, video, and other resources at ElvisCostello.com.
